Textual Analysis of a Music Magazine Double Page Spread
This is a double spread music page of an American rapper, Fiasco. The denotation of this image, left page shows an artist looking away from the camera with a light shine upon him, almost like a spot light.
The masthead of this page is ‘Fiasco @ 9:30’ the text type is the largest on the page and grab most attention to the audience. The image is a very important part of the magazine. The technique of mise-en-scene, the costume of this artist is casual looking, simple dark hoodie. The hoodie is indicating informality, which could be suggesting he’s not high class, wearing suits or working class. Fiasco’s watch is a part of his costume, the watch is large and gold symbolising glamour, his glasses are also apart of this costume, this could signifies intelligence in himself. There is a primary lighting above the Fiasco, shined upon him, and the lighting is high key meaning the lights are set to be bright, clear and shadow free. This is almost seen like a spotlight suggesting a stage show. With a dark background, the lightings acts in the same way as death of field, however, the death of field is wide meaning the image is evenly focus, so the lighting overtakes the job by focusing the attention to Fiasco through the used of lighting. The non-verbal communication of Fiasco shows confident, intelligence and comfort. Fiasco is looking up away from the camera with a straight face, one brow up and one hand besides his face indicating he is thinking. Also fiasco is looking up suggesting he is powerful, comfortable. The image is a mid-shot composed asymmetrically with no rule of thirds and has a wide death of field. Most work is done through the photographer in this image.
Second page to the right has more text involving the subject. The denotation of this page, top half is a long shot and informational text overlapping by the side. Below are several paragraph of information on the subject. The image is taken in a dark surround therefore it is mainly black. The denotation of the image is Fiasco himself performing live with a blue light shining upon him. The lighting of this image is low key meaning there are many dark shadows and little lights. The primary lighting is a strong vibrant blue light aimed on Fiasco from a high angle. This connotes an indoor show or a club setting. This also suggests a mysterious and interesting theme. Because of the image being low key lighting, the whole page is has a black background so that the image can fit in. text are colour coded to separate them from each other to prevent any mix ups. However the sub title has both colours although the text is with no other paragraphs. The editor has made the sub title independent and self-sufficient, by highlighting the key words. Also paragraphs below uses the same two colours to highlight different texts.
