College Magazine Textual Analysis

College Magazine Textual Analysis

The denotation of this image shows a symmetrical mid shot of a college student with several books in his hand, this connotes a sense of organisation, order and positivity in a teenage lifestyle at college. This magazine contains all Mise-en-scene except setting. There is no setting in this image, but just a grey tinted background.

The individual’s costume is a fancy wear, for example, a dark leather jacket, jeans and flashy necklace. His prop are class textbooks held in his hand, a representation of education. The individual’s non-verbal communications is positive, such as, his body language is cool and relaxed. His facial expression is happy and smiling. And lastly, the lightings are strong on both side of the individual, also a soft lighting is in front of the individual. This lighting is high key lighting meaning the lightings are set to be bright and free from shadows. This image is composed symmetrical vertically. This connotes a sense of organisation, order and control. Finally, the depth of field is wide meaning focus is strong on everything.

A Masthead is the name of the magazine displayed in a specific typeface. It is usually done with a specially designed typeface in order to make it recognisable and unique. In this magazine, the masthead is called ‘College Lifestyle’ written large in yellow with a grey background. Also the text size is very large and place on the top of the page. The masthead is fairly large and coloured yellow which is very effective because the colours are creating contrast.

A Coverlines are piece of text that attracts an audience to the contexts of the magazine. They are often distributed around the main image. Coverlines usually have two parts, such as a ‘kicker’ in bold fonts with an explanatory line. This magazine has many coverlines. One example is ‘Why we love blackberry’ followed with ‘And why it’s all the rage on campus’. This coverline is smaller than the masthead, it is coloured white and circulated around the main image. This coverline made a mistake of over lapping the main image and parts of the explanatory text have similar colours with the image, rendering the word invisible and unreadable.

Another example is ‘Make Money on Campus’ followed by ‘Entrepreneurial tips you need to know’. This coverline is also small, but coloured yellow. The colour changes are to help separate the different coverlines. However, the same mistakes are also made with this coverline, such as text overlapping the main image and similar colours between the text and the main image.
A Dateline should always be on a magazine front cover. The month and year of publication is often with the price. However, this magazine’s dateline is in top right hand corner, ‘The opening issue summer 2009’. With a dateline on the magazine, the audience can identify if the magazine is valid or outdated.

A Barcode are used by retailers so that the sale of the magazine can be registered quickly during its purchase. This magazine’s barcode is at the very bottom left side. If this magazine did not have a barcode, this magazine will be difficult to register, could be seen as fake and have a low sale, because the costumer will find registering the magazine without a barcode ridiculously long and pointless.

A Selling line in a short, sharp description of the title’s main marketing point or perhaps a setting out its editorial philosophy. For instances, this magazine’s selling ling is ‘Your exclusive guide to everything hip hop & happening’. Although t is phrase is above the masthead, the text font is smaller, and too long to be a masthead which means it is a selling line. However, there is a mistake, parts of the text is cover by the main image which makes it difficult to read.

The main image is the most important part of the magazine cover. The consumer magazine editors worry more about the cover than any other pages which is why the main image is most important to attract the audience. This magazine’s main image is the college student, with his text books in his hand. The photographer has taken a mid shot of the college student, with two strong lightings ob both side of the individual. The depth of field is wide meaning focus is strong on everything, and the image shot is composed symmetrically vertically. However both photographer and editors have worked hard in making this magazine.

The main coverline is the largest coverline on the front cover. Its purpose is to display and promote the main featured articles in the magazine. For example is ‘Dancehall’s Bright Future’ followed by ‘Jeffrey ‘assassin’ Campbell.’ This coverline is also coloured in yellow and in bold large texts, however the text is not in large fonts as the masthead, which makes it the main coverline. However, this coverline has many mistakes made, such as over lapping the main image and parts of the explanatory text have similar colours with the image, rendering the word invisible and unreadable.

A shape on the cover that contains information to attract the audience is called a puff. This magazine’s puff is a pink ink splat containing ‘Splat! Let’s Go Paintballing!’ this puff is advertising paintball games and this attracts the audience because the pink plat shape has contrast with the dark coloured background.
